The Exchange – 11 October

The Exchange on 11 October

with Penny Maroun

It’s The Exchange this Friday (11 October). Penny Maroun will be sharing on the topic, “My Magnificent God.”

Penny is a mother of three and a qualified teacher. However, in 1988 – due to a series of circumstances – she got involved in construction and real estate and also, some time later, established an expo that has now morphed into the Better Homes expo, a very unique concept for its time.

We’re looking forward to being encouraged by Penny this coming Friday and hearing her story.

The Exchange with Dr William Fowlds – 6 December

Acclaimed Rhino Conservationist, Dr William Fowlds, at the Exchange on 6 December

Acclaimed conservationist, rhino activist and wildlife veterinarian, Dr William Fowlds, will be speaking at The Exchange, Johannesburg – a business forum at Cornerstone Church Bedfordview – on Friday, 6 December at 6am for 6:30am. Dr Fowlds will be talking about his Christian faith and his passion for nature and how these work together. For more on Dr Fowlds, see below.

His talk will be followed by a continental breakfast and donations to pay for the costs of the breakfast will be taken up.

Entrance is free but space is limited. Registration for the event is now closed.

More about Dr William Fowlds

Dr Fowlds is a well-known and respected veterinarian who is passionate about wildlife conservation and, in particular, dedicates a huge portion of his time championing the plight of the rhino through various initiatives. One of these initiatives is a partnership with the Investec Rhino Lifeline project, which aims to “raise awareness of the rhino crisis and to respond through education, rescue and prevention initiatives.”

In addition to his conservation initiatives, Fowlds also provides training and educational opportunities for vet students at schools on all five continents, exposing them to the many conservation needs of Southern Africa. He has a stellar reputation with the academic fraternity, eco-tourism organisations and wildlife conservationists. He has also appeared on international television shows on NBC and ITV news.

Recently, Dr Fowlds documented a 2012 heinous poaching attack and the subsequent slow recovery of one rhino at the Kariega game reserve in the Eastern Cape (two of the other rhinos attacked unfortunately died). This has raised a great deal of awareness about poaching and the illegal rhino horn trade.

Below is a video clip from NBC featuring Dr William Fowlds. Please note, it is sensitive viewing.

Travel:
Maseru is 480Kms away from Centurion, and we allow 5½ hrs ( 440Kms from JHB / 5hrs ) for the trip including an average boarder crossing, but is good to keep a buffer in case of a busy boarder or a slow trip.

Possibly the quickest route is to take the Bloemfontein route, until you pass Ventersburg, then Winburg, Marquart, Clocolaan, Ladybrand, Maseru.

With a bit of driving around in Lesotho, we budget on about 1100kms.
If we share petrol it works out to about R350 per person per vehicle (four people) return.

Paradigm Shift Report-Back

with Allister Long

On Friday, 6 September, Allister Long from Paradigm Shift will be providing a report-back on some of the wonderful achievements that this entrepreneurship programme has achieved.

You may recall Allister presenting Paradigm Shift along with Jedd Schroy in October last year. Since then Paradigm Shift has run several workshops and has seen some wonderful successes. This is a great opportunity to help alleviate poverty and if you know of anyone who would be interested in the programme, bring them along.

What is Paradigm Shift?

Paradigm Shift trains churches in providing effective, long-term solutions to the poor in their communities. The programme specifically targets entrepreneurs who are making about R150 a day and provides them with business training, microloans, mentoring and discipleship.

“The programme targets individuals who turn to entrepreneurship as a way out of poverty. It aims to help these entrepreneurs grow their businesses beyond subsistence,” says Paradigm Shift‘s website.
