Friday the 13th Movie Night
Arriving at the Lamunu Hotel in Braamfontein was exciting. The impressive courtyard area with its super-sized screen was a pleasant distraction from the cold Joburg night we were in for. Popcorn makers, coffee brewers and all sorts of technicians were getting ready for the first feature: Jaws! Residents of Braamfontein hesitantly started feeding in. Queues started forming for free popcorn and very quickly people began mingling with one another while waiting for their treats. Trying to keep up with how many people started arriving proved to be a challenge but to look up and see who was helping and welcoming was truly incredible. Our Cameroonian friends, Terence and Sam, Lizelle and Terese – each doing their part and treating each person that arrived with care and interest.
Jaws was a resounding success. People huddled together while screaming with fear and delight as images of Great White sharks flashed on the screen above. Intermission gave everyone an opportunity to stretch their legs, warm up and meet a few new faces.
No one could have anticipated the amount of people that attended and we were overwhelmed with our community’s response. Despite long queues for popcorn and limited seating there were little other Friday the 13th glitches.
