Prayer and Fasting
14 – 15 August, 2020
We had a great time hearing from the Lord during our prayer and fasting weekend during August, 2020. This document is meant to, as best as possible, summarise what we believe the Lord was saying to us as Cornerstone Church during this time. We’ve tried to incorporate as much feedback as possible and assess what appear to be the main themes the Spirit is leading us in.
Called to wait and yet go
We received many scriptures during our prayer and fasting time where the Lord encourages us that His gospel will not be stopped, His Kingdom will succeed.
Daniel 7:13-14
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
In this time, we need to understand that the Lord is on His throne and is directing history.
Psalm 8:1-9
To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of David. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. (2) Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. (3) When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, (4) what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? (5) Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. (6) You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, (7) all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, (8) the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. (9) O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
The past is past
Philippians 3:13-14
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, (14) I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
The gospel is not bound
2 Timothy 2:9-10
…For which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! (10) Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
Do not withdraw at this time but be the salt and the light
Matthew 5:13-16
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. (14) “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. (15) Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. (16) In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
- There is an imminent breakthrough and a groundswell of the gospel—of His people grasping the truth of His gospel and taking this truth into our city, our nation, and the world.
At the Feet of Jesus
Luke 10:38-42
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
-
Mary has chosen the good portion. We can choose the good portion!
-
Waiting on the Lord does not imply just “soaking” in His presence and never doing anything. What it means is that we are by His side, ready to serve, as a waiter, in a sense. It means we are intimately familiar with His wants, His unique qualities, His Will, His ways, His heart. That’s intimacy! At the moment of His instruction we execute that instruction, with joy and gladness, knowing who He is.
-
It means that our worship fuels our mission.
-
Our intimacy with Christ is of first priority! We need to get back to this intimacy. It is this very intimacy that will energise us for the works He has for us. It is this intimacy that will make us familiar with Him and His way and will so we can do what He wants!
-
We can get very busy doing what we assume service to Christ looks like. This can distract us. But instead of dreaming our dreams for what God wants to do, we must dream the dreams of God.
-
Some of us need to get our dreams aligned with God
-
Some of us need to start dreaming again!
There is no conflict between Jesus’ praising of Mary for ‘waiting’ and His continued call to us to ‘go’. In John 12 we see that Mary, again, anoints Jesus in a way that no one else did. She had a revelation of who He is and that revelation is what we need to do what God is asking for us.
- We cannot go and share who Jesus is if we don’t know who He is!
- We need a revelation of Christ to give a revelation of Christ!
- We need to firmly graps the gospel in our own hearts
The gospel is unstoppable
Isaiah 59:
21 “As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,” says the Lord. (NIV)
Isaiah 60:
Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.
2 See, darkness covers the earth
and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you
and his glory appears over you.
3 Nations will come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
Jesus and the Spirit cannot be stopped! The end of Isaiah 59 is like a flood moving into Isaiah 60 where we see our light has come! The Glory of the Lord rises upon us and then rises on the whole earth, and nations will come into this light!
Eternal life is now
John 17:3
3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
Eternal life doesn’t start one day. It starts now. We pray, “May your will be done on earth as it is done in heaven” (Matthew 6:10) because the Kingdom is advancing here on earth now, not just “one day”.
-
We are to listen to Jesus but listening implies doing what He says. Listening is also an activity.
-
Knowing Christ means knowing who He is and then doing what He does.
- We are to know Christ and make Him known!
