BIO: JOHN

Nickname: Together with his brother James, they were known as the “Sons of the Thunder”
Marital status: Unknown
Hometown: Bethsaida (was living in Capernaum)
Profession: Fisherman
Age: 16-18 years old
Relatives: Father – Zebedee
Mother: Possibly Salome (according to some Church tradition)
Brother: James
Social Status: Uneducated. He was in partnership with Peter and James. Fishing business
Personality: Bold, loyal, zealous, intensive, passionate (“son of thunder”)
Death: He was never martyred according to tradition. He died in Ephesus around 98AD. Died as an old man, outlasting the other disciples.

General facts: According to many interpretations, he was, for a time, a disciple of John the Baptist and was called by Christ from the circle of John’s followers, together with Peter and Andrew, to become Jesus’ disciples (John 1:35-42). The apostle John also is credited with writing five books of the New Testament: the gospel according to John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John and the book of Revelation.

INTRODUCTION

We can’t talk about the twelve disciples without looking at the life of John in detail. Although we looked at him earlier along with his brother James, we need to also look at him specifically. Remember, the point of this series is to bring back a clear understanding of discipleship and how Jesus did it. As we come to Jesus, some of us have run into dead ends, but we’re given the Gospels in particular to go back and check and see what Jesus intended and find answers to the question of why he called us. School Holidays in the Toddlers Room

Hi moms & dads,

Holidays are around the corner and that means your kids will be joining us in the main Sunday morning meetings. As much as we love for the whole family to be together, we know how tough it can be to keep your kids busy during the meeting. Unfortunately the Toddlers Room can only facilitate children from 0 – 3 years old.

We’ve come up with some ideas to help you:

  • Colouring-in books, books to read, sticker books, activity books etc.
  • Pack a box of crayons or coloured pencils & collect an activity sheet from the INFO desk before the meeting begins
  • If you have a tablet or smartphone, there are plenty of age-appropriate apps, games and movies that can be downloaded from your device’s store. (Please note: if you do this option, headphones are essential.)
  • Finally, we have two outside areas with speakers where you can sit and listen to the message while your child / children play. These are outside by The Coffee Shop and also outside at the sandpit by the downstairs Babies Bible Class room.

We understand that, for some families, only one mom or dad may be able to make a meeting with two children (one under 3 yrs and one over 3 yrs). We are happy to accommodate such a situation in the Toddlers Room provided you prepare a quiet activity for your older child during the meeting.

Have a great holiday!

Finding Our Story

by Ryan Peter

“From strife to rest; from darkness to light; from death to life; from war to peace; from hate to love. This is the story of man and the story of God.”

This was one of the tag lines for The Story this weekend – three evenings of film, music, poetry and storytelling. It was a fantastic production in every way – moving and inspiring, showcasing the amazing talent we have in our community. (Yes, it was all a home-grown production!)

But what I took from The Story was such an overwhelming sense of my own sin and an even more overwhelming sense of God’s grace, and just how much bigger that grace is compared to my sin. It seems to me, after this weekend, that living with a deep sense of these two contrasting realities is necessary for a healthy Christian life. It’s partly why Jesus probably instituted that we regularly break bread, so we can remember what He did and why.

I must admit that The Story had a way of highlighting these two aspects deeply in a way that didn’t let you leave and just move on. It’s interesting how the Christian life is made up of so much sorrow (due to our sin) and so much joy (due to God’s abundant grace and mercy) all at the same time. I believe this is a good thing.

While I was moved I also had fun with friends at this weekend. If we do The Story again later on in this year I really recommend it. It’s a great opportunity to invite friends and family who may be closed to the Gospel but open to art and film, two wonderful ways of telling God’s Story.

BIO: ANDREW

 Name: Andrew, meaning manly.

Hometown of origin: Came from the little fishing town on the North coast of Galilee called Bethsaida.

Relatives: Simon Peter’s brother

Profession: Fisherman, in partnership with his brother, Peter and their friends, James and John.

Married: Unknown.

Age: Unknown. Probably younger than Peter.

Best remembered for: Introducing people to Jesus; Peter his brother, the boy with the fish and loaves of bread and some Greeks.

Social status: Unknown. Perhaps slightly higher than others if his low opinion of Nazareth is considered.

Personality: Skeptical.

Position amongst the 12: Seems to have been friends with Philip.

General facts: Andrew is not a startling character: there is no dash and activity like Peter, no strong determination and unpredictable character like James and John, and no dramatic conversion like Matthew. He appears to be quiet, thoughtful, persistent and unassuming – but his work was vital. He brought his brother to Christ and little realised what far-reaching results that would have. In fact, he seems to have learnt from John the Baptist that the most important task in life is not to make a name for oneself, but to bring people to Jesus: his brother, a little boy with some bread and fish, and a party of Greeks. There are no impressive exploits, no crowds following him, no miracles recorded and no great preaching. But through Peter, thousands heard of Christ and millions have read his letters, through the young boy thousands were fed from one of Christ’s most outstanding miracles, and through the Greeks our Lord finally revealed his purpose to reveal himself to the whole world as its only light.

Ministry after the ascension: According to Hippolytus (an early church father from Rome):, Andrew preached to the Scythians (modern day Georgia) and Thracians (modern day Bulgaria, both Georgia and Bulgaria are adjacent to the Black Sea near Turkey).

Death: He was crucified, suspended on an olive tree, at Patrae, a town of Achaia (Greece); and there too he was buried.

BIO: NATHANAEL

Name: Nathanael or Bartholomew. Nathanael means “gift of God”.

Father’s name: Unknown

Hometown of origin: Cana in Galilee

Profession: Unknown. Perhaps a fisherman. He was fishing with Peter, James and John and three others on the Sea of Tiberius when Jesus appeared to them after his resurrection, resulting in the second miraculous catch of fish.

Married: Unknown.

Age: Unknown. Probably young. Most sources say Peter or James were probably the oldest of the 12, being between 20 and 25 years old. It is quite possible that he was still in his upper teens or low twenties.

Best remembered for: Being introduced by Philip to Jesus. Being seen under a fig tree.

Social status: Unknown. Perhaps slightly higher than others if his low opinion of Nazareth is considered.

Personality: Skeptical.

Position amongst the 12: No significance.

General facts: Often mentioned with Philip. Was skeptical about Jesus being the Messiah because he came from Nazareth. He obviously had a low opinion about Nazareth.

Ministry after the ascension: Initially in Jerusalem and then we have no sure Biblical account. Tradition puts him in various places, including having traveled to India, Mesopotamia, Armenia, Parthia, Ethiopia and Lycaonia. He is said to have converted Polymius, the king of Armenia to Christianity.

Death: Traditional accounts claim that he was martyred in Albanopolis in Armenia. Some say he was beheaded others that he was flayed alive and then crucified upside down.

INTRODUCTION

When we look at Andrew and Nathanael, what we want to highlight is that it’s about learning to become Christ followers. In this series there are two things God is putting his finger on: character and mission. And as we look at these two disciples we see how God developed their character.

Character is not an old fashioned idea that we no longer need. It’s still extremely important to God. In fact, God looks at character more than He looks at gifts and callings. Whenever you read about the qualifications for leaders in the Bible, most of the time it focuses on character more than anything else. Read more

Junior Youth Camp 2014: A Transforming Time!

JYC2014-16x10

By Cindy Hazley

“Do not conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”
Romans 12:2.

This was the verse and theme of this year’s Junior Youth Camp (YFC) and this is exactly what God did.

The camp started and ended with rain and more rain but as the rain came down so did God’s Holy Spirit. Worship is always a special time on camp but this year, no matter whether we jumped around like crazy, acted like monkeys, or even stood still, there was such an anointing and a feeling of His presence.

The main focus of the hall sessions and quiet times were how to be transformed. The children learnt that they need to be transformed from the inside out; the importance of being filled with the Holy Spirit; and many other Godly principles through the skits, object lessons and testimonies that were shared.

In children’s ministry there is never a dull moment and activities included teams pushing cars across the sports field, human foosball, pool noodle hockey, circle games and even create-your-own-human-transformer. Of course God knew what the weather would be like over the weekend and looking back we smile as we realise that our “indoor in case it rains” programme was planned even before we started planning the outdoor games. God is so good.

Thank you to all the people who made donations so that so many more children could join us on the camp. Both children and leaders from all the Cornerstone sites joined together for this fabulous weekend away. They came ready to be transformed and with God’s grace they left as transformers!

Hi everyone,

We are in Abu Dhabi still awaiting Keir’s visa for Bahrain. They lost the first application and so now trying again. In the meantime we are ‘forced’ to rest up, which has been good. We had such a wonderful time in the church here and really saw God do what no man can do. Hope you have received the testimony of the guy that got healed, walked from the wheelchair and was immediately baptised in the pool. We stand in awe of our great God. The church has been greatly encouraged and equipped.

Loads of love
Two traveling T’s; K+C

Feb 24-28 – Bahrain

Hi everyone,

Just heard the guys in Bahrain cannot get a visa for Keir. So we are staying extra time here in Abu Dhabi @ Cornerstone Church, and they are so excited to have us again. “Man plans his ways, God directs the steps…”

The church here have been so amazingly responsive to the word of God and really pushing in to what The Holy Spirit is doing. Also this weekend there is a gathering of churches around “The New wine” – an overflow from John Wimber, involving main-line churches and hosted by the Anglican Church. Amazingly there are 160 church gatherings in AD; 80 within labor camps and 80 without. The Anglican Church is considered by the Emiratees as the main representative.

Feedback from Newday in Westrand, Jannes Labuscagne reported:

“Hi Keir, great to hear what God is doing trough you guys!! We’ve had our biggest attendance ever, this last Sunday and are certainly seeing a whole lot of momentum in different areas of the church. Please share with is about some of the things that God is doing that side, so we can keep stirring our people’s faith this side…..”

Love to you all
Blessings,

11-17 Mar – Misissagua Toronto

Hi everyone,

We are in Mississauga Toronto with Lifehouse church. This is the third time we are in the church and this evening was the first of the five sessions we have with them. They are a growing church in the community with a real passion for people. We ministered to the elders of a church in Pickering Toronto yesterday and as the evening drew to a close there were quite a few tears and hearts crying out for revival.

Next week we will be traveling to Halifax, in Nova Scotia (New Scotland). This is a new church for us to be in and they are sooo excited that we could come. It is a two hour flight east of Toronto.

On Wednesday evening in a prayer meeting at the Bridge Church in Pickering a word was brought to Callie and I:

“The motto on our coat of arms in Latin means ‘from sea to sea,’ taken from Ps. 72:8: ‘May he rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.’ Feeling that as K&C travel across this country from east to west, they are fulfilling our country’s motto, proclaiming Christ’s rule across the nation. [Also – “from the River to the ends of the earth” – the southern border of much of eastern Canada is the St. Lawrence River, and Canada extends up to the Arctic Circle.]”

So it is with great expectation we go to Halifax in the East and minister throughout this land of Canada.

We will keep you posted. Missing you and our love to you all.

Keir and Callie

11-17 Mar – Misissagua Toronto

We so miss you all and wonder how the weekend went.

We talk about Cornerstone everywhere we are and so many names come up from our church as many know, remember or have family in the church.

Well we have spent considerable time with a church -Lifehouse – and had five meetings with them and they have been hugely encouraged. In having a lunch and a chat with a couple who have moved up from Brazil to Lifehouse Church shared this with us:

“A friend of mine heard that one of his friends had died suddenly and she was  already in the morgue to his surprise. So he went to the morgue and asked the officials if he could pray for her. He got permission and so set about praying for her. He said “(her name) come back, I rebuke the spirit of death”. She did, she opened her eyes and began to breathe … Not only her but another eight other dead people came to life in the same room. This rocked our city and caused many people to come to churches all over the city.”

I have never heard of such a testimony.

Today we set off as a surprise leg of our trip to Halifax on the East Coast. We didn’t make Bahrain and we didn’t plan Halifax … God has. So we are expectant and looking forward to making new friends. We will tell you news of this before the weekend.

Love to you all.

Blessings,
Keir and Callie

11-17 Mar – Halifax

Hi Everyone,

We arrived at Halifax and it was snowing and -6C …. Love it!!!

We send this to you as it is simply an amazing write-up on “apostolic relationships” put in print in such a wonderful way. As Mike Hanchett  often gets us to say – “its not about me”, and it’s not about us  – it’s about Him.

This could be written about any one of us. I share it with you as it is a “summary” about what Cornerstone Church is about. We do it together.

By the way those eight dead raising was in a city in Brazil.

Do You Believe In Miracles?
Written by Mark Ellwood

Ephesians 4:11
“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, some to be pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of the ministry.”

It is with much excitement and anticipation that we once again welcome to The Bridge;  Keir and Callie Tayler. I can’t think of anything more Jesus exalting than to be equipped to carry on His work on this earth. No matter in what arena God chooses to use you, us, together. Living in a fallen world that is crying out for reality. A world where the supernatural of the divine Spirit of God will overcome the natural, and God in His grace and mercy chooses to use earthen vessels like Keir, Callie, you and me to accomplish His purposes WOW.

Our friendship with them spans two decades, so they come by invitation, not as a guest speakers or an unknown faces, but as family to impart and impact “ The Bridge” and our community.

Having recently completed our “Equip Time” on“Discovering Your Spiritual Gift”.  They come as a gift (doma), a recognized Ephesians 4 gift, to our shores, and we receive them as such.

It is with much excitement and anticipation of what our mighty God will do, reveal, encourage, equip and strengthen through this amazing couple.

Matthew 10:41
“The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward.”

I believe that even as we accept them, or as scripture states in the ESV translation; “receive”them, we will receive the due reward. My faith is taking an extra ordinary leap to partner with what God intends for us. Faith is not a feeling but a gift of God.

Bridget and I have had the privilege of traveling and ministering side by side, with Keir and Callie, and on one occasion, on our return was asked to report to a group of pastors. They asked “what did you do?”. With pure naivety, I replied we preached the gospel, and blind eyes were opened, deaf ears heard and the cripples walked. Increduous to say the least, thereafter their faith was increased and I was able to lay hands and pray for healing which took place, as faith was released and increased.

We  have put time aside for Keir and Callie to minister a body of truth, to build with them, and hear what is on God’s heart for us. To exalt the name of Jesus and bring glory and honour to His name. They will be with us March 19th – 23rd.

They hail from South Africa, and continue to travel extensively throughout the world ministering the gospel of Good News with signs and wonders following.

Looking ahead into 2014, and the promises of God of an inheritance year, individually and as the Bridge family. We want to march boldly forward into the more of what we firmly believe God has for us

I encourage you to take hold of this amazing opportunity to join in with us, be equipped, and prepared for “the work of the ministry”, that God has laid ahead for each one of us.

These are hands across the waters strengthening one another.

As a thought to ignite a flame within you….

Do you believe in miracles?

17 March – return from Halifax

Hi Everyone,

We have returned from Halifax where we had input to a church there called Anchor City Church.

Halifax lies opposite another town called Dartmouth, and between these two cities, in Nova Scotia is the deepest natural harbour in the world. An amazing sight. Monster ships cruise in to offload cargo. A military base nearby and even expansion of another port underway.

Well we gathered with the church for two nights in an amazing venue and spoke to those who came. There weren’t many as it was at short notice and ‘spring-break’ was starting. However, our Lord was ever encouraging and healing. Three salvations on the first night and healing – one person had stage one diabetes and reported that his sugar levels had remained normal for the duration of our time there. He was sooo excited about it. He brought friends the second night, …. that’s evangelising.

Keir met two other leaders in the city and had a good time with them – sharing what we had done over the years and about our home base church.

In summary, the leaders of Anchor City church, Dan and Katie, were so encouraged that we would take time to come to them and lift up arms. For us it is always a huge privilege.

We will be with Redhill Church in Milton, Toronto for the weekend. Jaco and Kathy Maree who lead the church were home cell leaders of ours in the 90’s; when we were pastors in a church in Pinetown.

Love to you all
Blessings,
Keir+Callie=

1-7 AprilNainamo

Hi dear friends,

Our adventures in God is coming to an end soon; we have just finished doing Facelift with Oceanside church here run by Mike  and Debs Graves (old friends of ours from the 90s when we were pastors with City of Life Church in Pinetown). Recently added to Oceanside are Russel and Glyn Eels from Pietermaritzburg whom we met in India many years ago so it was SO nice connecting with old friends. They are a huge gift to Oceanside church.

The meetings started on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and during that time people were saved. Mike tells us that it is so hard to get people out of darkness into the light so we were delighted when the first night a man was saved.  On Sunday morning there were quite a few salvations including the sister of a man who had lived in the same town for seven years and yet they had seen each other twice over that period.  He was weeping as she confessed Jesus as her Savour. The church was overjoyed with the response to the gospel although Keir had to work hard to pull them out of darkness into the light Jn 3:19. Probably at least 6 brand new souls. We rejoice at how God reconciled families and friends and did what only He can do healing and breaking chains.

We go to Victoria this week to Trinity church which has just been taken over by Mark and Jen duToit. Funnily enough they met each other when Jen decided to come on a trip to Africa after Keir had been to Nanaimo many years ago.  It is our last week before we go to spend a week with our beloved Pete and Lisa and granddaughters at Bethel in California.
Will report on that event later. Meanwhile our dearest love to you all.

In Him.

Blessings,
Callie

MEET THE MEN

Name: Philip
Marital Status: Home town and general facts: Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. He was called by Jesus to follow him the day after Peter and Andrew.
Profession: Unknown
Age: Unknown
Death: A second century Ephesian tradition believes he died at Hierapolis, roughly one hundred miles inland of Ephesus. Another tradition says Philip was crucified; and as a result, medieval art often depicts Philip on the cross.

**

Name: Thomas, or Didymus, meaning the twin
Profession: Unknown. Possibly a fisherman. He was fishing with six other disciples (Peter, James, John, Nathanel and 2 others that are unnamed) on the Sea of Tiberias after Jesus’ resurrection when Jesus appeared to them. The second miraculous catch of fish happened and Jesus cooked them breakfast. It seems as though these men had gone back to their old job in the absence of clear direction from Jesus after his resurrection. Hometown: Unknown. Traditionally somewhere in Galilee.
Married: Unknown.
Age: Unknown. Probably young. Most sources say Peter or James were probably the oldest of the 12, being between 20 and 25 years old. It is quite possible that he was still in his upper teens or low twenties.
Post-ascension ministry: There are many different accounts but they generally seem to agree that he first travelled through the near east: Turkey and Iran (Persia in those days) before reaching India sometime between 49AD and 52AD. He is generally credited with being the first to take the gospel to India, and beginning the church which then became the Orthodox church in India. His time in India is surrounded with legend with claims that he ministered to kings, built many great buildings, and evangelised a great many people. Historical evidence does seem to indicate that the orthodox churches in India (including southern India) are old enough to make the spread of the gospel there in the first century plausible. Certainly Christianity is one of the oldest religions in India – older than Islam.
Death: Most traditional accounts claim that he was martyred in India sometime about 72AD, possibly at Mylapore near Chennai. There is a tomb in Chennai which is claimed to be the tomb of Thomas. A catholic church, San Thome Basilica, was built over this tomb in the 16th century. Other traditional accounts claim that he was martyred in Persia. Still others claim that he died a natural death in Edessa. The last account is an account from the explorer Marco Polo from the 13th century: he claimed that Thomas was accidentally killed by an arrow near Chennai – he claimed that the arrow was shot by a man hunting peacocks.

**

Name: James son of  Alpheus
Father’s name: Alphaeus
Town of Origin: Unknown.
Other names/nicknames:    Possibly ‘James the Less’ or ‘James the Younger.’ This is a result of a possible correlation with the James referred to in Mark 15.40 who may or may not also be the James (the son of Mary) referred to in Luke 24.10 and (more probably) Mark 16.1.
Meaning of nickname: The Less would probably have referred to a younger age or a shorter height – not importance or status.
Profession: Unknown
Hometown: Unknown.
Married: Unknown.
Age: Unknown. Probably young. Most sources say Peter or James were probably the oldest of the 12, being between 20 and 25 years old. It is quite possible that he was still in his upper teens or low twenties.
Best remembered for: Being one of the 12.
Relatives: Possibly the brother of the apostle Matthew (Levi) who is also referred to as the son of Alphaeus. Otherwise unknown. Some dubious traditional sources claim he was a member of Jesus’ family – usually his brother, half-brother or cousin.
Social status: Unknown.
Personality: Unknown.
General facts: None known.
Post-ascension ministry: Very little known.
Death: Tradition maintains that he was martyred by crucifixion in Lower Egypt at Ostrakine.

**

Name: Jude, also know by several other names: Judas (not Iscariot) and Thaddeus. In lists of the Twelve, he is called Thaddeus, a surname for the name Lebbaeus (Matthew 10:3, KJV), which means “heart” or “courageous.” He wrote the book called Jude in the New Testament.
Marital Status: Unknown
Home town: Unknown
Profession: Unknown
Age: 16-18
Relatives: Father – Alphaeus , Brother – James the Less
Social Status: Unknown
Personality: A man of unwavering conviction
Death: He was crucified at Edessa, A.D. 72 while on a missionary trip to Persia, according to tradition.

**

THEY LAID THEIR LIVES DOWN

As elders we feel that, as a church, we are called to be followers of Christ, and that’s what the disciples were. They learned Jesus’ trade, which was to seek and save the lost.

We don’t know much about these four disciples. When it comes to Peter, James and John we see them often encouraged and rebuked and a lot of scripture is around them. It’s been difficult finding things about these four men, we’ve had to look at church history in a big way for this one, to see how they influenced the world.

What’s significant about all four of these disciples is that they laid their lives down for the Gospel. Read more

The Exchange (7 March)

The Exchange on 7 March

Living passionately and enthusiastically

It’s The Exchange this Friday (7 March). We’ll be kicking off our new seven part series that looks at the seven letters to the churches in the book of Revelation and applies the principles found there to our roles in the marketplace.

This week we’re looking at the church in Laodicia, known for being lukewarm and blasé. We, however, are called to live passionately, enthusiastically and zealously in all that we do.

It promises to be a challenging and inspiring time!
